COMPOSITE RESTORATIONS
What is a composite (white) filling?
Composite is a dental material that is made of a tooth-colored plastic mixture filled with glass, specifically silicon dioxide. This material is versatile and can be used to restore decayed teeth, as well as for cosmetic purposes such as improving the appearance of discolored or misshapen teeth.
The procedure is minimally invasive, which means that it requires very little tooth preparation. In fact it can be completed in a SINGLE visit!
Benefits of using composite restorations
- Aesthetics: Composite fillings can be matched to the color of your natural teeth, making them a more attractive option compared to traditional silver (amalgam) fillings.
- Bonding: Composite fillings can be bonded directly to the tooth structure, which helps to strengthen the tooth and prevent further decay.
- Preservation of natural tooth structure: Composite fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure compared to amalgam fillings, which means more of your natural tooth can be preserved.
- Versatility: Composite material can be used for a variety of dental procedures, such as repairing chips and cracks, closing gaps between teeth, and reshaping teeth for a more even appearance.
- Durability: While composite fillings may not last as long as amalgam fillings, they are still a durable option and can last for several years with proper care.
- Bonus: It can work as a temporary fix for injured teeth!
How long will a composite last?
The lifespan of a composite restoration can vary depending on several factors such as:
- Size
- Location of the restoration
- Oral hygiene habits
- Diet
On average, composite fillings can last between 7-10 years or longer with proper care.
Note: Large composite restorations may have a shorter lifespan. Maintain good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for regular checkups to extend their life.
